Newcastle United: New owners should remove Dennis from wish list
By Durim Halimi
Newcastle United’s soon-to-be owners are already thinking of their transfer targets this summer, but one player must be removed from their list.
Newcastle United fans are finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers are simply waiting for Premier League officials to give them the green light before they take the keys to St. James’ Park.
The new owners of Newcastle United have a lot of work to do, but it seems like they have the ambition to restructure things from the top down right away. Their willingness to get started immediately is reflected in the fact that they have already begun identifying possible transfer targets.
As we reported yesterday, the Magpies’ unofficial new bosses are interested in signing Dries Mertens from Napoli. The Belgian international would be a major upgrade to the current front line, but the narrative surrounding the other striker Staveley and company are interested in is quite different.
In addition to Mertens, Newcastle United have their sights set on Nigerian international striker Emmanuel Dennis from Club Brugge in Belgium. At 22, Dennis has the potential to develop into a decent striker, but his scoring record is far from impressive, and that raises red flags.
Newcastle United are in dire need of some experienced strikers that have proven records of being clinical in front of goal. Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto only managed to score one goal this season, and it would not come as a surprise if Carroll, Gayle and Muto are released or sold this summer.
The Magpies are solid in defense and they are blessed with some dynamic players in midfield, but new owners must invest wisely on the front line. In his three seasons in the Belgian top flight, Dennis has only scored 19 goals in 76 games, which equates to 0.42 goals scored per 90 minutes.
As I mentioned earlier, Dennis has the necessary traits to raise some eyebrows in the future, but Newcastle United need to sign strikers who can have an immediate, meaningful impact. The main objective of the PCP partners is to elevate the status of Newcastle United in the Premier League, but that will not happen with players like Dennis leading the attack.
Initial transfer reports are essentially meaningless, and the new owners will make their objectives clear once they officially replace Mike Ashley. However, if there is any truth to the aforementioned report, then they should take a step back and identify some new strikers.
