New relegation calculations have been published by FiveThirtyEight and here is what the latest odds say about Newcastle United.

Newcastle United claimed three precious points away from home against Southampton yesterday and are now sitting eight points clear of 18th-placed Bournemouth. The Magpies only managed to claim one point from their last three games and began dragging themselves into a dangerous relegation battle.

Yesterday’s 1-0 victory at St. Mary’s Stadium provided an extra cushion for Newcastle United and this is now reflected in the latest Premier League relegation odds. According to new calculations from FiveThirtyEight, Newcastle United can be considered safe as their chances of going down are at 5%.

Yesterday’s opponents are also considered to be safe as their relegation odds are 4%. The calculations are confident that the current bottom three will be the same bottom three come week 38 of the Premier League, but Brighton, West Ham and Watford are far from safe at the moment.

Analyzing Newcastle’s Relegation Odds

Newcastle United have 35 points at the moment and they have nine games left to play. Of the remaining nine games this season, the Magpies will go up against five relegation-threatened teams. In other words, Steve Bruce’s men will have the easiest schedule, on paper, to close out the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.

That being said, fans will be expecting Newcastle United to claim a few more wins, especially when they host teams like Aston Villa and West Ham at home over the next month. The problem, however, is that Newcastle United have fallen asleep at the wheel against mediocre, bottom-half clubs.

The Magpies need to find motivation against these teams to climb the table and earn the best possible finish. There are still 27 points up for grabs, and although I expect the Toon to slip up here and there against teams below them, they have the talent and momentum to grab a few more wins and maintain their Premier League status. In fact, I am predicting that we will reserve our place in the Premier League with a win against Sheffield United next weekend.

FiveThirtyEight predict Newcastle United to finish the season with 44 points, and I would put my prediction at around the same tally, especially since relegation-threatened opposition will be giving it their all against the Magpies.
