The Recap

After a mid-week win for Newcastle United over Sheffield United, the Magpies rumbled with the Saints of Southampton at home. Steve Bruce’s side was set up defensively, but they battled to keep the ball and held 45% of possession, a higher total than most matches this season. In a scoreless first half, Martin Dubravka made some big saves to keep things level.

Then, early in the second half, Danny Ings was able to put So’ton up by a goal after getting in behind Federico Fernandez. Less than 20 minutes later, an in-form Jonjo Shelvey equalized for the home side. On the play, Shelvey had clipped a ball in towards substitute Andy Carroll at the far post from a free-kick. The veteran striker chased down the ball after it was headed away and crossed the ball back in, which Shelvey headed home.

Sean Longstaff’s long-distance shot was parried away by Alex McCarthy, but the rebound went directly into the path of Fede Fernandez and the defender buried an 87th-minute winner. While they held on to win, the match ended on a negative note as Allan Saint-Maximin suffered a hamstring injury which caused him to miss significant time.
