The Recap
This was one of the toughest matches to watch this season for Newcastle United. It wasn’t a blowout, but it was a disappointing display. Despite surprisingly leading in possession, the Magpies finished with zero shots on goal and lost a 1-0 snoozer at Turf Moor.
Two Newcastle replacement players had a chance to make a statement, but they didn’t step up. Sean Longstaff stepped in for Jonjo Shelvey and was poor in the midfield and with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron out, Christian Atsu couldn’t provide much in the attack. This match also saw Joelinton play wide left in place of ASM as Andy Carroll started at striker. Andy Carroll missed a quality chance early on and Dwight Gayle came off the bench to miss the best opportunity on the day and neither could even put a shot on frame.
The loss came in the middle of two Premier League wins over Southampton and Crystal Palace. It was the type of uninspired performance that has popped up at times throughout this season.
