Newcastle United would be making a major mistake if they let Matty Longstaff leave the club at the end of this season.

The January transfer window is now behind Newcastle United and the club must turn their full attention to securing the services of Matty Longstaff beyond this season. The youngster’s contract expires in a few months and some of Europe’s most notable teams, such as Inter Milan and AC Milan, are monitoring his situation.

The 19-year-old currently earns £1,000 per week and he certainly deserves a significant pay raise based on his performances this season. His brother, Sean, is also in the negotiation process with Newcastle United, but the Magpies did a solid job of convincing Sean to sign a new contract last season that will see him stay on Tyneside until the end of the 2022 season.

The club would like to extend Sean’s contract once more, but Matty’s situation is more pressing. The youngster is undoubtedly considered as the most promising player on the roster, and his performances this term have shown us just how impressive he can be. So far this season, Matty Longstaff has made seven appearances and scored two goals. Longstaff had an amazing debut against Manchester United back in October, in which he scored the game-winner, and he has gone on to start five other games after making his debut.

Matty Longstaff is a special player who brings a high level of energy in the middle of the park for Newcastle United. The academy product is not a box-to-box player, but he makes up for that with his unwavering work ethic higher up the pitch. Longstaff has shown Steve Bruce and the fans that he can be a threat for keepers when he has the ball 20-plus yards away from goal.

A new report from SkySports  confirms that Bruce is worried about the fact that Longstaff and the club have not reached an agreement yet. The same report went on to say that Bruce hopes “common sense” plays its part in the process, which is his way of telling Longstaff that he has featured in more Premier League games than his peers in England.

Longstaff is a talented youngster with plenty of potential to become a star player for Newcastle United. Only 19, Longstaff still has much to learn and has time to develop his skills in what is considered to be the best league in the world. The young midfielder is years away from reaching his peak as a player, but he deserves a new contract worth a lot more money.
