Newcastle United erupted in stoppage time yesterday for a draw in another example of a new trend for the club.

Yesterday, Newcastle United came back to equalize vs. Everton courtesy of two goals from Florian Lejeune in stoppage time. This draw comes less than a week after Isaac Hayden’s stoppage-time winner vs. Chelsea. Those two matches are the latest examples of a change of fortune late in matches for Newcastle United comparatively to last season.

Looking at matches that were decided by one goal or finished level, there were 11 examples where a goal was scored in or after the 80th minute.  Eight of those results went in opposite favor of Newcastle United.

  • DeAndre Yedlin scored an own goal in the 87th minute in the third match of the season vs. Chelsea.
  • After trailing 2-0 to Newcastle, Manchester United scored three straight goals, including Alexis Sanchez’s winner in the 90th minute.
  • In December, Matt Doherty pushed Wolves past Newcastle in stoppage time and Abdoulaye Doucoure equalized in the 82nd minute.
  • Son scored a match-winner in the 83rd minute for Spurs.
  • Another dramatic match vs. Wolves saw Willy Bolly equalize in stoppage time.
  • Luka Milivojevic gave Palace a 1-0 win in the 81st minute.
  • A back and forth match between Liverpool and the Magpies ended with a Divock Origi winner in the 86th minute.

The three positive results for Newcastle United were their 2-1 win against Manchester City (Ritchie winner in 80′), a dramatic 3-2 win over Everton (Ayoze equalized in the 81st and won it in the 84th minute), and a 2-2 draw vs. Bournemouth (Ritchie with a stoppage-time equalizer).

Now, fast forward to this season. There have been five matches that were decided after the 80th minute. All five of those have gone in favor of your Magpies.
