Newcastle United defeated Rochdale 4-1 in their FA Cup third-round replay.

On January 4th, Newcastle United played to a 1-1 draw against Rochdale in the FA Cup third round. They looked the better side for chunks of that match, but they couldn’t put away the League One side. Today, they showcased their clear advantage and hammered the Dale at St. James’ Park, 4-1.

This one was not competitive for long. Rochdale center back Eoghan O’Connell put the ball in the back of his own net in the 17th minute. Less than five minutes later, Matty Longstaff controlled the ball well right in front of goal and turned to fire Newcastle up 2-0. Before the half-hour mark, Miguel Almiron continued his great form with the third goal on the day for Steve Bruce’s side.

Typically, the fourth goal in a blowout win is nothing more than a note on the match information, but the final tally for Newcastle United today was big. Joelinton finally broke through from a lengthy drought and after he struggled to finish against Rochdale the first time around. Matt Ritchie, Karl Darlow, and Thomas Allan provided the assists. Allan was making his professional debut and came on for Jamaal Lascelles in the second half.

Next up, Newcastle United will host another lower league side as Oxford United will come to Tyneside on January 25th. The League One side defeated Hartlepool in the FA Cup third round and they played to a scoreless draw with Ipswich Town in league play today. The Magpies have made it to the fourth round five times since the calendar struck 2010. They haven’t advanced beyond this point since the 2005-06 edition of the tournament.
