Newcastle United were defeated in front of a full house at St. James’ Park for the first time since losing to Arsenal on opening day.

Newcastle United put up a decent fight against Everton, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side managed to score twice through Dominic Calvert-Lewin to claim all three points. The Magpies failed to set the tone of the game early on and only had momentum on their side for 15 to 20 minutes.

Fabian Schar: Great goal, poor defending

Fabian Schar brought Newcastle United back into the game with a great equalizer in the 56th minute. That goal marked Schar’s second of the season. Although the Swiss international did well to level the score, he also failed to mark Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box in the 64th minute, in which the striker scored his second goal of the game to give Everton the lead.

Andy Carroll in top form

Andy Carroll was, once again, the most prominent attacking player for Newcastle United. Joelinton put in a great shift, but it was Carroll who won duels in the final third, created a few dangerous chances, scored a goal that was ruled offside and completed an assist to Fabian Schar.

Holding the ball too long

Newcastle United performed better than they did against Manchester United on Boxing Day, but they repeated some of the same mistakes against Everton. The most notable error was the failure to clear the ball or pass it off to the nearest teammate in a timely manner. Everton managed to steal the ball with ease in situations where the Magpies simply had to clear the ball. This mistake also set up Everton’s winning goal.

Quick Kicks

  • Newcastle United created 12 chances (three on target) in the first half and added eight more shot attempts, with two being on target, in the final 45 minutes.
  • DeAndre Yedlin did well to bring the ball forward on the right flank. The American utilized his pace to create sufficient pace and delivered a few decent crosses as a result.
  • Despite conceding a goal early on, Martin Dubravka was lively between the sticks and his quick reactions saved the Magpies on multiple occasions. His best saves came in the opening ten minutes when he made two saves from two different angles in five seconds.
  • Poor marking in the box and a couple of wasted chances is what doomed Newcastle United against Everton.
