Ranking Newcastle’s next 5 games by difficulty
By Durim Halimi
4. Wolverhampton
- When: Saturday, January 11th
- Where: Molineux Stadium
Wolverhampton have not played all that well this season, but they always find a way to squeeze past opponents or salvage a point late in games. As a result, this unwavering work ethic has Nuno Espirito Santo’s men in the top six with 27 points. Every time time the Magpies and Wolves meet the game ends up being a close battle.
The last game between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park. A similar outcome at the Molineux Stadium would not be a major surprise. A win for Newcastle United would be fantastic, but a draw should also be considered a positive result for the Toon away from home against a top six side.
3. Manchester United
- When: Tomorrow (Boxing Day)
- Where: Old Trafford
Manchester United are coming off an embarrassing loss to Watford and this loss pushed the Red Devils out of the top six. Furthermore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot afford to lose another game to an inferior opponent, especially at home, or else the door might swing wide open for Mauricio Pochettino at Old Trafford. That being said, Manchester United’s desperation to bounce back will be problematic for Newcastle United.
This is one of those games where the Magpies will spend the majority of the time chasing the ball and pouncing on the it to press forward on the counter-attack whenever the opportunity presents itself. The Red Devils’ loss at St. James’ Park two months ago is still fresh in the minds of the players and it should serve as motivation for them to avenge that defeat.
Manchester United will be the favorites to win on Boxing Day, but Newcastle United are full of confidence. With Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Alimron in fine form as of late, the Magpies might be more creative than we think. Overall, though, this will be a difficult game for Newcastle United.
