Preview: Newcastle aim to hit 25 points at Turf Moor
By Durim Halimi
Newcastle United will face a Burnley side that is desperate for a positive result tomorrow at Turf Moor.
Newcastle United will be looking to claim their third consecutive victory for the first time this season, but Burnley will do everything they can to ensure that doesn’t happen as they are currently on a three-game losing streak. Burnley are an intriguing opponents because their form this season has been inconsistent and unpredictable. If the Magpies do win tomorrow they would have 25 points two games before the halfway point in the season.
Where They Stand
- Newcastle United: 11th, 22 points (6W-4D-6L)
- Burnley: 13th, 18 points (5W-3D-8L)
Analysis
Newcastle United are not lacking confidence at the moment after drawing with Manchester City and defeating Sheffield United and Southampton, but Burnley will present the Magpies with a unique challenge. The last time Steve Bruce’s side faced a team that lost three straight (Aston Villa), the Magpies lost 2-0.
Burnley understand the importance of this clash and anything less than three points will be considered a disappointment by their squad and their fans. Burnley have been hot and cold this season, so it will be interesting to see which team shows up. It will also be interesting to see how Newcastle United cope without Allan Saint-Maximin, who has officially been ruled out of action for the next month.
Newcastle United will be dependent on Christian Atsu to fill that void on the wing opposite of Miguel Almiron. In addition to Atsu, all eyes will also be on Jonjo Shelvey to see if he can continue his phenomenal form. The stand-in captain has scored a goal in three consecutive games, and the Magpies have scored an impressive 11 goals in their last six games, which is something Bruce hopes will carry over into tomorrow.
A win for Newcastle United would see them reach 25 points in mid-December and could see them break into the top ten before facing Crystal Palace next weekend. The Magpies might be favorites to win tomorrow on paper, but they need to be ready for the pressure that Burnley will apply from the opening whistle.
Predictions
Tomorrow’s game is one of the more difficult games to predict, but Carson and I will give it our best shot. Both of us think this will be a tight affair between two evenly matched teams and as a result we both went with draws. See our score predictions below:
- Carson A. Merk: Burnley 2-2 Newcastle United
