Looking at Newcastle United’s recent history vs. Aston Villa
Before their matchup on Monday, we look back at Newcastle United’s recent history vs. Aston Villa.
Newcastle United will take on Aston Villa on Monday following a November international break. With the clubs alternating positions in the Premier League and Championship, they have not faced off since 2017. Based on the recent history, it’s probably best for the Villans that they’ve avoided the Magpies for a couple of years.
In their last twelve matchups vs. AVFC, Newcastle United have zero losses and six wins. That unbeaten streak runs back to September 2011 with Villa’s last win over the Magpies coming in April of that year. Despite the lopsided results, only one scoreline was decided by two goals and none by more than that.
In a 1-1 draw in 2012, the lone Villa goal was scored by current Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark. Hatem Ben Arfa salvaged the draw that day with an equalizing goal.
The most dramatic match of that run came in February 2014 at St. James’ Park. With everything level in the final minutes, Aston Villa could not clear the ball and Loic Remy buried the late winner in Premier League action.
Overall, the clubs have played 163 times across all competitions since 1895. Newcastle United hold 71 wins in the all-time series. The most lopsided win for Aston Villa came in 1902 with a 7-0 scoreline. Newcastle United’s biggest win was in 2010 when they won 6-0 at St. James’ Park. On that day, Andy Carroll scored a hat trick to go with a goal from Joey Barton and a brace from Kevin Nolan.
