Newcastle United held on to defeat Bournemouth at St. James’ Park, 2-1.

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side followed up a quality away win vs. West Ham with a 2-1 home victory over Bournemouth today. DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark provided the goals for the hosts after Harry Wilson opened the scoring for the Cherries.

Top for the Toon

DeAndre Yedlin: His headed goal came from a combination of his pace, good timing, and quality awareness to make that run and stay onside. The American speedster also made a clearance of a shot when Martin Dubravka was out of the goal. His work rate was top class on the day.

Ciaran Clark: The central defender was in the right place at the right time to tap the ball in for Newcastle’s second goal.

Federico Fernandez: He made some big tackles, countless clearances, and headed the ball towards goal on Clark’s goal. Without Lascelles, Fernandez made sure to step up and keep

Mediocre Magpies

Joelinton: I understand that he’s often isolated and does well to pass and win the ball in the air, but he is a striker and a striker has to score. He had another poor effort early in the match and couldn’t chip Bournemouth keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the second half after he got in behind the defense. He had another chance in the 80th minute and sent a weak shot directly at the keeper.

Quick Kicks

  • Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron’s search for their first Newcastle goals is truly an adventure every week. ASM had multiple chances to open his account today and couldn’t break through and Miggy whiffed on a shot earlier and blasted a rebound effort into a downed Saint-Maximin.
  • While neither has scored, both players have been so impactful making long solo runs, pressing to win the ball back, and create chances for themselves and Joelinton.
  • The amount of goals being scored by the Newcastle United defenders is shocking at this point. They have scored the majority of the team’s goals from a variety of fashions. Imagine if the attackers start scoring on their quality offensive chances and combine that with the opportunistic defenders in the box.
  • Losing Jamaal Lascelles to injury is not ideal, but at least it came before an international break. After that, we should see him, Fabian Schar, and Florian Lejeune all at Steve Bruce’s disposal.
  • That set-piece design by Bournemouth on their opening goal was a thing of beauty. While it was frustrating to go down early, you have to tip your cap to that kind of creativity from Eddie Howe and his staff.
  • It’s been nice to see Newcastle United play on the front foot for a considerable time in their last two matches. They’ve done well to push the action into the attacking area.
