Newcastle United have only scored nine times this season, but seeing where their goals have come from is surprising, and seeing who the team’s top scorer is will make you scratch your head.

Newcastle United are coming off their best offensive performance of the young season after they managed to score three goals to claim three points against West Ham United in London. Based on the chances the Magpies created yesterday, it is fair to say that Steve Bruce’s side should have scored five goals, but we are quite content with the three they did score.

Overall, though, Newcastle United are still one of the lowest scoring teams in the Premier League with a mere nine goals from 11 matches. As has been the case in the last few seasons, the goals are coming from all over the place.

Mike Ashley stunned us all by spending a total sum of £81m on Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton, but this trio has only managed to score one goal this season, which came from Joelinton against Tottenham. That being said, 89% of the team’s goals this season have come from midfielders and defenders. We already know this is going to be a long and interesting season seeing that our top scorer at the moment is… Jonjo Shelvey.

Shelvey leads the pack with the two goals he scored against Norwich City and West Ham United, but the interesting thing is that our top scorer has only made six appearances this season. He is the only player in the squad with more than one goal to his name this term.

Four goals from defenders

The Magpies’ back-line has stepped up for the team in a big way. Not only have they kept Newcastle United competitive in matches through their stubborn defending, but they have scored some crucial goals as well. The following defenders have scored for Newcastle United this season:

  • Fabian Schar (Watford)
  • Jamaal Lascelles (Wolverhampton)
  • Ciaran Clark (West Ham United)
  • Federico Fernandez (West Ham United)

Four goals from midfielders

The Toon have plenty of talent in midfield, but they need to contribute more goals. With multiple midfielders who can create chances for themselves, the goal tally from midfield should be higher, but maybe this recent victory against West Ham United will serve as a boost of confidence going forward. The following midfielders have scored for Newcastle United this season:

  • Jonjo Shelvey (Norwich City, West Ham United)
  • Jetro Willems (Liverpool)
  • Matthew Longstaff (Manchester United)
