According to a new report, Newcastle United are already in talks to sign a defensive midfielder from France in January.

A new Sky Sports report was published a few hours ago and the exclusive information claims that Newcastle United are already in negotiations with Strasbourg to complete the transfer of Ibrahima Sissoko in January. The report states that Newcastle United could secure the services of the defensive midfielder for £10.5m.

The Magpies have been linked with Sissoko in the past, but it looks like they aim to transform their interest into a proper deal. The key question to ask regarding this potential transfer is if the 22 year old Frenchman is worth pursuing? The short answer to this question is yes.

Not a Financial Gamble

If Strasbourg’s asking price for the France Under-21 international was in the £15m to £20m range his transfer would be a major risk, but the asking price is just right. The Magpies are being cautious with the money they spend going forward as a result of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, a duo worth £61m, only having a combined tally of one goal and no assists. Spending £10.5m for a youngster with a lot of potential is considered a steal in today’s market.

Promising Young Talent

Only 22, Sissoko’s arrival would, from the best of my knowledge, make Newcastle United the team with the youngest core of midfielders in the Premier League. Despite his young age, Sissoko already has 48 first team appearances with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 and the Europa League under his belt. Having young players with plenty of upside in their game is one thing, but when you combine that talent with meaningful experience in one of Europe’s top leagues and continental competitions the squad can only benefit from such a player.

Provides Depth in Midfield

With Ki Sung-yueng and Jonjo Shelvey falling out of favor on Tyneside, the timing of Sissoko’s potential transfer to Newcastle United would occur at the best possible time. The key central midfielders in the squad are Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Matty Longstaff. The young trio generates optimism among fans because they are proving to be reliable, high energy players. Sissoko would provide much needed internal competition in the middle of the park and his experience playing with Allan Saint-Maximin for France (Under-21) would also help accelerate his adaptability to the team and the league.
