Newcastle United could only manage to take one point from two meetings last season vs. Wolves.

After a close loss to Chelsea last weekend, Newcastle United will try to bounce back against Wolves. The clubs met in the Premier League Asia Trophy tournament this summer and the Magpies were blown out by a 4-0 scoreline. But, last season’s fixtures were much closer. We take a look back at those two matches before Sunday’s match.

12/9/2018: Wolves 2, Newcastle United 1

This was an incredibly action-packed affair at St. James’ Park between Newcastle and Wolves. Diogo Jota got away from Jamaal Lascelles in front of goal and knocked home a cross off of Martin Dubravka. Salomon Rondon nearly equalized as his free-kick clanged off the crossbar, but he would make up for the close miss seconds later. He chased down the rebound well outside the box and his cross found Ayoze Perez’s head for the Newcastle United goal. It was an ultimate highlight of effort and skill for Rondon.

In the second half, DeAndre Yedlin was sent off, courtesy of a straight red card. His poor touch led to a turnover and he brought down Jota on the break. It was poor quality and poor decision-making from the American defender. Despite playing down a man, it seemed like Newcastle United would hold on for a draw. But, in stoppage time, Matt Doherty found a winner to break the spirits of Toon Army.

2/11/2019: Newcastle United 1, Wolves 1

This was a deja vu match for the Magpies. An odd tandem of Fabian Schar assisting Isaac Hayden gave Newcastle United a lead before the hour mark. Sean Longstaff and a debuting Miguel Almiron allowed them to control the action and keep that lead until stoppage time…again.

In the fifth minute of the additional time, an Adama Traore cross floated high in the air towards the Newcastle United goal. Martin Dubravka went up to collect the ball, but he was not assertive enough and Willy Boly heading the ball in over him. Was the goalkeeper fouled? Probably. But, he needed to do more to catch the cross and Newcastle United were again foiled in the final minutes by Wolves.
