Mesut Ozil is hoping to find a new club in January after falling out of favor at Arsenal, but Newcastle United should pass on the opportunity to secure his services.

A few years ago, Mesut Ozil was recognized as one of the best central midfielders in the world, and the former Real Madrid star was a key player for Arsenal up until Unai Emery took over as manager last season. Ozil has only made one appearance for Arsenal this term, but he has made a total of 167 Premier League appearances with the Gunners since 2013 and has 32 goals and 52 assists to his name.

So, seeing that a such a talented player with an impressive track record in the Premier League could be up for grabs in January, why am I saying that Newcastle United should look the other way? I have a few reasons that can explain my point of view.

Another Michael Owen?

I am certain that many of you are aware of the recent statements made by Michael Owen in his book, Reboot: My Life, My Time. In this book, Owen opens up about his transfer to Newcastle United by describing the move as a “downward step” in his career. For Ozil, I honestly think he would have the same mentality. Having played for elite clubs like Real Madrid and Arsenal, a transfer to Newcastle United would enable him to compete in the best league in the world, but on a team that fights for survival every season.

If Ozil’s heart and mind were all in on a move to St. James’ Park then I think he would be a stellar signing, but they wouldn’t be. Ozil’s frustration from being excluded from the team sheet stems from his desire to play for Arsenal. He still thinks he can have a meaningful impact on a top European team, but now that Emery has pushed him to the side Ozil is looking for an exit, however, he is seeking a horizontal exit to another top team. All in all, he would not have the right mentality if he joined Newcastle United and the club most likely is not on his wish list.

Current Status of Newcastle’s Midfield

Another reason why the Magpies should not express interest in the former German international is because the squad has some decent depth in central midfield. Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Matty Longstaff are showing plenty of promise and most supporters see this trio as the trio of the future for Newcastle United.

The sluggish form of Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng definitely helps make the case for why the club should consider bringing Ozil in, and although I agree that new midfielders should be brought in to replace Ki and Shelvey, there are better, younger, and more ambitious players on the market.

Final Note

As much as I respect Ozil as a player and value the unique skills he has displayed in the Premier League, I do not think he would be a good fit for Newcastle United. At 31, Ozil still wants to win silverware and play for a team that competes in a continental tournament before he retires in a few years. Well, Newcastle United used to take 12,000 supporters to the San Siro for Champions League football, but those days are long gone.
