Newcastle United were handed a tough loss to swallow after conceding five goals to Leicester City yesterday.
Newcastle United were not expected to win last night against Leicester City, but the assumption was that this game would be close. The red card issued to Isaac Hayden in the 43rd minute changed everything. Yes, Leicester City were in the lead, but the Magpies could have remained competitive and the outcome would have been much more respectable. At the end of the day, though, the 5-0 defeat goes on record and this could hurt the team in terms of goal differential at the end of the season.
Top Toons
Yoshinori Muto: The Japanese international only played for 43 minutes to make way for a tactical change because of Hayden’s red card, but he looked great on the ball every time he got a touch, and he wasn’t afraid to take on defenders.
Mediocre Magpies
EVERYONE! The entire team struggled in the second half and they didn’t even bother putting up a fight.
Quick Kicks
- Isaac Hayden, did you not learn your lesson from last season’s game against Cardiff City? You simply can’t commit such an aggressive tackle right in front of the referee. Come on.
- Another game of the Toon chasing the ball. Steve Bruce’s side finished with 30% possession.
- Newcastle United understandably spent most of this game defending, but before the red card they only created three chances, all of which were off target.
- Newcastle United’s lack of energy in the second half is a major concern. This is the third time this season that the team looked like they had given up 45 minutes early.
- Martin Dubravka was under constant pressure last night, but he should have done much better between the sticks on some of the goals, especially when Jamie Vardy scored from a tight angle.
What’s Next?
Next up for Newcastle United is a clash against Manchester United at St. James’ Park. Both teams need a win in order to calm nerves among their respective fanbases, and both managers need a win as they find themselves in the hot seat due to slow starts to the season.
