Newcastle United only took one point from their two matches vs. Brighton last season.

The three clubs that were promoted after the 2016/17 season finished in very different places last season. Best of the bunch, Newcastle United finished 13th on the Premier League table with Brighton below them in 17th and Huddersfield Town were relegated. Despite finishing four spots ahead of them, Newcastle United surprisingly struggled against Brighton and Hove Albion. We look back at the two matches between the Magpies and the Seagulls last season.

10/20/2018: Brighton 1, Newcastle United 0

Newcastle United hosted Brighton and rather than sitting back and counter-attacking, Rafa Benitez had his club playing on the front foot. They totaled over 20 shots and controlled the majority of the match at St. James’ Park. But, somehow, they were shutout at home. Even worse, Brighton found a goal, despite being second-best on the day. A poorly rewarded corner kick led to the lone goal for the Seagulls.

Yoshinori Muto, in a rare start, missed an opener header and Newcastle United couldn’t take advantage of positive performances from Jonjo Shelvey and Kenedy.

Next. Expectations must be low for Carroll and Gayle. dark

In one of the final matches of the season, Newcastle United secured an away draw vs. Brighton. Ayoze Perez scored in the first half, which the Magpies controlled. But, Brighton took over in the second half at the AMEX and equalized. There were shouts for a penalty as Salomon Rondon appeared to be fouled, but the notorious Mike Dean saw the play differently.

The draw essentially locked up Premier League safety for Brighton and it ended a two-match win streak for the Magpies.
