Newcastle United scored first before conceded three straight times to lose at Anfield.

Despite a surprising beginning, this match went about as expected between Newcastle United and Liverpool. Jetro Willems opened the scoring with a powerful blast before a Sadio Mane brace pushed the Reds past Newcastle. Mohamed Salah scored the insurance goal in the second half to secure the 3-1 scoreline.

Top Toons

Jetro Willems: What a strike. His touch from his left foot to his right was lovely and his strike was sublime. When he had his chance, he converted.

Christian Atsu: He assisted on Jetro’s goal and helped created most of the limited chances Newcastle United had on the day.

Isaac Hayden: He was all energy and effort on both sides of the ball, chasing the game and the action in the Magpies’ midfield.

Mediocre Magpies

Emil Krafth: Getting another start at right-back, Krafth couldn’t convert a major chance that would’ve leveled things at two in the second half and he was careless in his distribution at times.

Martin Dubravka: While he made some saves to keep this one competitive, his mistake on Sadio Mane’s second goal was essentially a back-breaker for his side.

Quick Kicks

  • Honestly, you can’t really be mad about this one. Newcastle United had a shocking lead early on before the better team won. A 3-1 loss isn’t the worst result against an unbeaten, reigning Champions League champion.
  • Joelinton didn’t have much of an impact in this one, but I think that is just how the action was dictated.
  • Miguel Almiron’s performance was a little bit better, making solo runs against the Liverpool defense.
  • I have no clue why Emil Krafth started ahead of Javier Manquillo again. I won’t elaborate here because there’s an article on the way on this exact subject.
  • My top hope for this match is that Fabian Schar’s knock is a minor one. He is such a vital piece for the Magpies.

Next. Expectations must stay low for Carroll & Gayle. dark

What’s Next?

Next weekend, Newcastle United will host Brighton in an important fixture during the early stages of this season. The Seagulls are taking on Burnley as we speak and have one win so far this year.
