Newcastle United move up to four points on the season after a draw vs. Watford.

After a narrow defeat midweek vs. Leicester in League Cup play, Newcastle United battled to a 1-1 draw against Watford at St. James’ Park today. Will Hughes opened the scoring for the Hornets and Fabian Schar equalized for the Magpies.

Top Toons

Fabian Schar: When Newcastle United needed an equalizer, the Swiss defender was there to knock the ball home.

Isaac Hayden: He was all-action again today for the Magpies. Hayden worked hard to win the ball back in the midfield and was able to move out wide when needed in the attack. His long shot in the second half forced a save.

Jetro Willems: His quick turns, intercepting ability, and eye for the attack were a welcome sight in place of Matt Ritchie.

Mediocre Magpies

Miguel Almiron: I would argue that he had the most negative performance for the Magpies today. He was called offside nearly a handful of times and missed a few passes and shots in crucial moments. After Newcastle United fell behind, Miggy had a chance to pull things level but couldn’t score directly in front of goal. I’m not holding him to a high expectation of goals and assists, but he needs to convert those chances. He had another great chance blocked just before the hour mark.

Sean Longstaff: His long passing left much to be desired in this one and his free kick deliveries were a mixed bag.

Quick Kicks

  • Obviously, the goal for Watford came from a fortunate deflection and a nightmarish defending from NUFC. When you concede that early, the game plan needs to change and it put them behind the eight ball.
  • Newcastle United held nearly 50% of possession. That is a far cry from most of their recent matches, when they have relied on counter-attacking chances.
  • I’ve really been impressed with Joelinton these last two outings. He’s inserted himself into the action and he’s a better passer than I expected.
  • Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster played a good game today. He was quick off his line to catch cross or cut out balls on the ground. The goal was his only weak moment of the match.
  • Javier Manquillo brought some nice energy and crossing off the bench today. Emil Krafth was a little bit better today, but I’d like to see Javi start next time out.
  • Christian Atsu also had a nice outing before subbing off. His cross early on should’ve been an assist to Almiron and he did well to make diagonal long runs, including one that was wrongfully called offside.
