Newcastle United went to London and shockingly took all three points from Tottenham.

Nobody gave Newcastle United a chance to win against Spurs today, barely anyone expected a draw. But, the Magpies walked in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, defended deep, took advantage of their chance, and secured a shocking early-season win.

Top Toons

Joelinton: The number nine was excellent in holding up play and unlike the Norwich match, he buried his chance when given the opportunity. Absolutely lovely performance despite not being 100% fit throughout the match.

Paul Dummett/Fabian Schar/Jamaal Lascelles: Newcastle United were truly defending against a firing squad throughout the match and the three-man central defense were ready for the challenge. They blocked shots, cleared the ball away, and went to ground when they needed to.

Christian Atsu: Thrust into a surprising early substitute appearance, his assist to Joelinton was picture-perfect. He used to pace to help spring Newcastle on the counter-attack.

Miguel Almiron: While the final third continues to be a trouble area for Almiron, his work rate, pace, and skill on the ball were all on display vs. Spurs. He made long weaving runs on multiple counter-attacks.

Mediocre Magpies

Emil Krafth: He just doesn’t seem to be adjusting quickly to the Premier League. His work rate is good, but he was left exposed by a few different Spurs players.

Quick Kicks

  • That was a beautiful, stressful, shocking, match for any Newcastle United fan. The lengthy stoppage time and the talented players that Tottenham has made the second half a high-pressure 45+ minutes.
  • Spurs finished with 17 shots, but only two of those went on goal. That’s a testament to the defensive unit protecting Martin Dubravka. One of those shots on goal was a volleyed blast from Son that the Slovakian did well to turn away.
  • I was as critical of Joelinton as anyone after the first two matches, but he was a star today. He was clearly laboring with some knocks in the second half, but he worked hard the entire match to win the ball, hold up play, and his finish was calm and composed. This match should springboard him this season and improve his confidence.
  • This is a major feather in the cap of Steve Bruce. Whether you think today’s result was a tactical masterclass or not, he had his club show up to play against a top side after a dismal outing last week and get a win. The lads worked hard and that’s an indication of Bruce’s ability to motivate.
  • Now, despite the big win, there are some injury concerns. Allan Saint-Maximin’s return from a hamstring injury was short-lived. He had to be subbed off early due to the hamstring issue reappearing. Jamaal Lascelles suffered a leg injury and was forced off. Injuries have derailed his development in the last two seasons and hopefully, this is only a small knock.
