Newcastle United will welcome Norwich City back to the Premier League this week. The Canaries opened their season with a 4-1 blowout defeat at the hands of Liverpool and now they will host the Magpies at Carrow Road. We take a look back at the history between the two clubs.
They have met 56 times with Newcastle United winning 24 of those fixtures. The other 32 matches are split evenly with Norwich winning 16 and 16 finishing level. The first meeting was back in 1934 when both sides were in League Division Two.
The best run for either side was for the Magpies between 1964 and 1975. Newcastle United went unbeaten in nine straight matches, including six wins. They would only win one of their next five matches. Norwich City has never won more than two matches consecutively vs. Newcastle.
Since 2012, Newcastle United are on another run of solid form vs. Norwich City. They’ve only lost one in nine fixtures during that time. The one they lost was during the 2015-16 season when both clubs were relegated. It was Newcastle United’s second-to-last loss that year. With both sides in the Championship the next season, the Magpies took four points from their two matches vs. Norwich. That includes one of the most memorable matches of the season. Norwich led 3-1 in the 70th minute at St. James’ Park. Dwight Gayle scored his second and third goal of the match to pull things level before Yoan Gouffran knocked home the match-winner in the 90th minute.
