The 2019 Gold Cup kicked off over the weekend and these three players could be solid additions for Newcastle United.

With 16 CONCACAF teams vying for the 2019 Gold Cup, Newcastle United would be wise to keep their eyes peeled for young talent in the region that includes DeAndre Yedlin’s United States, Mexico, the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica, and more. Here are three players that could find their way onto Newcastle United’s radar during and after the tournament.

Cyle Larin

Larin is a true number nine. He is big, strong, and can finish with both feet or his head. After starring in Major League Soccer, the Canadian made a move out of North America in 2018 to Turkey.

He currently plays with Besiktas. He scored four goals in four Super Lig appearances last season before struggling to make an impact this season, finishing with one league goal in 12 appearances. A change of scenery and service from Miguel Almiron could be exactly what gets the 24-year-old back on track.

Edson Alvarez

The 21-year-old Mexican can play in central defense, at right back, and also at defensive midfield. He already has over 20 caps for El Tri and is a budding star in Liga MX with Club America. Alvarez can build from the back, playing with confidence with the ball at his feet.

His arrival would help add young depth to the central defense, competition for DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo, and emergency coverage in the central midfield.

Jonathan David

Another Canadian target man, David started the Gold Cup with a bang, scoring a brace yesterday. He had a breakout beginning to his club career with Gent. He scored five goals in his first five matches with the club, finishing the season with eight goals in 23 league appearances. With great pace, he is able to run in behind defenders or blow past them 1-v-1.

The 19-year-old was born in Brooklyn, New York in the United States but suits up for Canada after moving there as a six-year-old. Despite his age and potential, I don’t think it would cost that much to bring him to Tyneside.
