The record-breaking signing for Newcastle United showcased the difference he can make for the Toon.

After rumors and speculation of his arrival, Miguel Almiron became the most expensive transfer in Newcastle United history. A star for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer, the Paraguayan was a gamechanger for the Magpies. We look back at his early time with the Toon and what he will bring to the club in 2019-20.

Newcastle United became America’s favorite team after taking an expensive chance on a Major League Soccer player, but that investment was worth every penny. Miguel Almiron failed to score or provide any assists, but he set up so many plays that led to goals. His arrival is what enabled Rafa Benitez to deploy a 3-4-3 attacking formation and, as a result, Newcastle United were a top five team in terms of performance in the second half of the season.

Almiron made the most out of his 10 appearances for the club to adapt to English football and he will be expected to be a primary offensive contributor next season. He proved that he can play in the Premier League, but now he needs to prove that he can score goals and bag assists when the team needs him to step up. He is untouchable in the starting lineup, so prepare to see Almiron on the team sheet from August through May next term.

I had pretty high expectations for him, but Miggy was actually able to surpass them. Yes, I know he didn’t register any assists or goals. Honestly, I’ve never seen that type of impact on the pitch without stats to back it up. His pace and creativity absolutely transformed the Newcastle United attack. While his season ended early due to injury, I don’t think it’s any indication that he can’t deal with the physical play in the Premier League.

Going forward, no matter what happens with ownership or the transfer market, Almiron is the star of the show. With a full season of Premier League play, he will be one of the most exciting attacking players in England. He can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wing. Whether it’s Salomon Rondon or a new arrival up top, expect them to benefit from Almiron’s ability to get in the box and make plays.
