Jacob Murphy spent half of the season with Newcastle United and the other half on loan with West Brom.

Newcastle United added Jacob Murphy to add some attacking threat back in the summer of 2017. He did not see much match time in his first season, stuck behind the likes of Kenedy, Matt Ritchie, and Christian Atsu. With everyone hoping he would force his way into the lineup, he failed to do so in 2018 before spending the second half of the season on loan in the Championship with West Brom. We take a look at the 24-year-old and if he has a future with Newcastle United.

2019 stats with West Bromwich Albion: 15 appearances, two goals, one assist

This is the second straight season where Jacob Murphy played great in two or three matches, but had zero impact and made some poor decisions in most matches. He was loaned out with the aim of developing his skills through more playing time, but he also failed to impress on loan at West Brom. His assist to Salomon Rondon against Everton was the only major highlight of his season. He is a humble player and he boasts plenty of pace for a winger, but I think his days on Tyneside are numbered.

Jacob Murphy’s assist against Everton this season was exactly what Newcastle United thought they were acquiring a couple of years back. He used his pace to burn the Toffees on the counter-attack and crossed in a perfect ball to Salomon Rondon, who knocked it home. Unfortunately, that assist from Murphy was his singular highlight for the Toon this season. He seems overwhelmed and outmatched in the Premier League and was rightfully loaned down to West Brom.

For me, sell him. I know the argument will be that they would be giving up on a young player too soon. But, he’s not that young (24) and if a player can’t break into the rotation in two years, will he ever? I don’t think there will be a massive market for him, but Newcastle United would do well to sell him to a Championship side where his skills dictate he belongs.
