The always steady left back for Newcastle United turned in another practically eventless season in 2018-19.

Everyone has that shirt or outfit that isn’t your favorite or spectacular, but it’s always there when you need it. Ol’ Reliable. Well, Paul Dummett has been that for Newcastle United since he made his senior team debut in 2013. We take a look at the Magpies’ left back.

Paul Dummett is not the type of player who amazes crowds with unique skills, but he is a blue collar defender who gets the job done. There have been games this season where Dummett’s impact has been minimal, but there have also been games where the Wales international was the most important defender on the pitch. In other words, Dummett has been a reliable defender who has not hurt the team in any way this season. Is he good enough to serve as the starter at left-back next season? Yes, however, it would not surprise me if Newcastle brought in a quality left-back this summer to provide more competition next season.

Honestly, Paul Dummett is one of the most intriguing players to evaluate for Newcastle United. He is incredibly reliable, as you can see with his zero errors leading to goals above. But, he’s also not often an impact player, especially going forward.

For me, I’m conflicted. I don’t think that left-back is a main position of need in the transfer market because Dummett is such a good defender and that cannot be disregarded. On the other hand, I look at Liverpool and they had two full backs break the record for assists in a season for defenders. While I don’t think it will be easy to find a player within their budget of that talent level, there’s probably a player that is an acceptable defender and would add more assists than Dummett’s zero from this season. I am fine if Dummett is the starter next season, but if they come across a potentially exciting option to replace him, I’m all for it.
