Rumor analysis: Rondon, Hayden, Longstaff and Diame
By Durim Halimi
The Premier League summer transfer window is now open and multiple Newcastle United players have been linked with moves away from Tyneside.
The conclusion of every Premier League campaign opens the floodgates of rumors and the first wave has hit Newcastle United pretty hard. Players are always linked with moves away from Tyneside during the season, but now is the time for other teams to formally act on their interest. This week, three Newcastle players and a former Newcastle loanee, who hopes to stay on a permanent basis, have been linked with other teams.
Salomon Rondon, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Mohamed Diame have all been in the news this week. Let’s dive in these rumors to see what seems like a real threat and what should be solely considered as meaningless gossip.
Salomon Rondon
Rumor:
Analysis:
- This is the most concerning rumor of them all because Wolves will not hesitate to pay the £16.5M West Brom are asking for his services. Newcastle is Rondon’s preferred destination, but at the end of the day football is business. So, if the Toon plan on signing their Player of the Year they need to do so ASAP. I mean, come on, he scored 12 goals across all competitions and bagged seven assists. Sign him up already before he scores goals against us next season.
Isaac Hayden
Rumor:
Analysis:
- The likelihood of Hayden leaving Newcastle this summer is very high after he put in two transfer requests, but the odds of him joining a Champions League finalist seem slim to me. He was a top player for Newcastle this season and his performances kept key midfielders on the bench for months. Truth be told, though, he would ride the bench in London. However, he could definitely start for several mid-table clubs located in southern England, which is where his family is located. Look for his name to keep popping up every week with a wide range of teams supposedly interested in the Arsenal academy product.
Sean Longstaff
Rumor:
Analysis:
- Simply put, Longtsaff is staying on Tyneside. How do I know? The club made it clear yesterday that Longstaff is not for sale. The 21-year-old has impressed in central midfield after becoming a regular starter in January, and the club is making the right move by keeping their future star. Longstaff will continue to attract interest, but he will not be going anywhere any time soon.
Mohamed Diame
Rumor:
Analysis:
- Mohamed Diame has spent most of his career playing in England, primarily in the Premier League, so it is no surprise that Crystal Palace are seeking to land a reliable defensive midfielder. Crystal Palace are known for their pace in midfield, but Diame would still be a good fit as he would bring some much-needed aggression in the middle of the park. It is worth mentioning that Diame has also been linked with teams in Greece and Turkey.
