Newcastle United scored 42 goals in the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, but our readers have made their selection for Goal of the Year.

The 2018-19 Premier League has concluded and this gives us the opportunity to reflect on Newcastle United’s performances this season. The Magpies finished mid-table for the second straight season after scoring 42 goals over the course of 38 games.

13 different players scored for Newcastle this season, but two players – Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon – combined to score 23 (55%) of the team’s 42 goals. However, none of their goals impressed our readers enough to award them with the Goal of the Year crown. Instead, this award went to a central defender who found the back of the net four times this season – a tally which actually made him the team’s third leading scorer.

According to the responses we received from our followers on Twitter, Newcastle’s Goal of the Year award belongs to Fabian Schar. On February 26th, Newcastle hosted Burnley at St. James’ Park and the Toon Army erupted in the 24th minute when Schar fired a rocket past Tom Heaton from 25 yards out. See the goal and reactions to the goal in the video below:

Not only did this goal impress the Toon Army, it impressed the Premier League and all of England as Schar was the recipient of the Premier League Goal of the Month award in February. It is always a joy to watch a player strike the ball into the net from distance, but it is even more amazing when you realize that player has no business shooting that ball as a defender. Schar put plenty of power behind his shot and his precision to hit the frame of the goal truly made it an unstoppable shot for any keeper, not just Heaton.

Newcastle have scored other great goals this season and it is only fair to show the team’s second-best goal some love in this article, too. According to the results in our poll, Schar took second place, too, with his solo goal against Cardiff City. On a personal level, this was my favorite goal of the season. Check it out below:
