Newcastle should avoid Danny Welbeck and Che Adams

Newcastle United have been linked with Danny Welbeck of Arsenal and Che Adams of Birmingham City over the last few weeks. It is encouraging for the fans to see the club searching for new strikers, but the Toon should pass on Welbeck and Adams.
Welbeck’s contract with Arsenal is set to expire at the end of this season and Adams is set to leave the Championship behind him with multiple Premier League sides expressing interest in the 22-year-old. Both players are talented, but here are my reasons explaining why the Magpies should hit the pass button on these strikers.
Pass on Welbeck
Welbeck is recognized as a notable English player who has represented England on the international stage and played for Manchester United and Arsenal at the club level. However, frequent long-term injuries have doomed his career, especially at Arsenal. Injuries aside, Welbeck’s overall career in the Premier League is not that impressive. He has made 206 Premier League appearances, but has only scored 42 goals, which equates to 0.2 goals scored per game. Newcastle can do much better in the transfer market.
Pass on Adams
I can see why Adams has made it on Newcastle’s scouting report. Mike Ashley wants to buy young players whose value would increase over the next few years, and at 22-years-old Adam meets that criteria. Secondly, Adams had a stellar campaign in the Championship by scoring 22 goals in 45 games for a team that will finish the season just a few places above the drop zone.
His statistics are impressive, but we need to remember one thing… it is the Championship! It is the same league that makes Dwight Gayle, a mediocre Premier League striker, look like Karim Benzema. I am certain that Adams will sign for a Premier League club this summer, but it should not be for Newcastle.
Final Note
The Magpies need a quality striker up top in order to compete for a top eight finish next term. The club’s main priority should be signing Salomon Rondon to a permanent contract, and that will become more likely if Aston Villa can defeat West Brom in the Championship play-offs. In addition to Rondon, the Toon need at least one more striker with Top Flight experience and a proven track record as a consistent scorer. Joselu and Yoshinori Muto have been major disappointments, but Welbeck and Adams would also fail to meet expectations on Tyneside.
