Newcastle United are in the spotlight of the Premier League this week as they prepare to host Liverpool at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

All of England and every Premier League supporter around the world will have their eyes on Newcastle United this weekend. The Magpies are in a unique situation as they have the chance to ultimately hand Manchester City their second consecutive title a week early if they manage to upset Liverpool on Tyneside.

The Premier League title race is literally neck and neck at the moment, and it has been that way for the last few months. At present, Manchester City sits in first place with 92 points and a goal differential of 68 goals, while Liverpool sit in second place with 91 points and a goal differential of 64 goals. The defending champions will close out the season against Leicester City (H) and Brighton (A). Liverpool will conclude their season against Newcastle (A) and Wolverhampton (H), which is a tricky opponent because of their impressive record against the top six.

Can Newcastle Upset Liverpool?

The key question that several Premier League fans will be asking themselves is whether or not Newcastle can take Liverpool down this weekend. The answer to that question is quite simple – of course Newcastle can upset Liverpool. The odds are certainly against the Magpies, but Rafa Benitez’s side has re-gained its confidence over the last few months and they will not back down against the Reds.

The previous meeting did end 4-0 in favor of Liverpool at Anfield, but that result means nothing. The last meeting between these two sides at St. James’ Park ended 1-1 and fans should expect to see a competitive game this Saturday. A list of notable teams that were defeated by Newcastle since last season include Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, so Liverpool are far from safe in this match.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will surely dominate the match, but it is important to remember that even a draw would end Liverpool’s title chances because we all know that Manchester City will not lose to Brighton. The only thing Newcastle’s players can and should do is focus on polishing their tactics and play well for their supporters. All of the media hype and attention can serve as a major distraction, but the pressure to perform truly rests on the shoulders of Liverpool.
