There are two Newcastle United players who will have to make some important decisions this summer.

Newcastle United have secured their place in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign after earning back-to-back wins against Leicester City and Southampton. This is great for the club and for the Toon Army, but the next few months will also be comprised of suspense. All eyes are currently on Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez to see whether or not the Spaniard will continue his managerial career on the sidelines of St. James’ Park.

In addition to Benitez’s contract saga, supporters will also monitor the situations with Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez. These two players will have some major decisions to make this summer regarding their futures. Will they stay? Will they go? No one really knows.

Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey went from being one of Newcastle’s finest players to the most notable name on the bench. The mercurial midfielder has only played 32 minutes since recovering from a thigh injury he picked up in November, and he is no longer happy on Tyneside.

The 27-year-old is a talented defensive midfielder who boasts superior passing skills, but his skills have been ignored for months now. Seeing that he has fallen to the bottom of Benitez’ pecking order, Shelvey must decide if he wants to use the summer to revive his career at Newcastle or put in a transfer request.

Ayoze Perez

Just when Perez started to enjoy the best form of his Newcastle career, the 25-year-old has hinted at a possible return to Spain. A new report from ESPN also claims that multiple La Liga clubs have been scouting Perez this season. One can also assume that his hat-trick against Southampton attracted even more clubs.

Perez is a quality player who struggles with consistency from time to time, but there is no doubt that he is one of the most talented and hardest working players on the roster. He has improved every season, but he must decide whether or not he will stay loyal to his contract, which expires in 2021.

From Perez’s perspective, he is most likely asking himself if he aims to build on his success next season with Newcastle or does he want to make his departure after his best season on Tyneside. The Spaniard has made 140 Premier League appearances with the Toon and scored 31 goals in the process.
