Newcastle United won their second straight match and Ayoze Perez scored a hat trick at St. James’ Park.

After a crucial away win at Leicester City on Friday, Newcastle United made it two straight with a 3-1 win over Southampton at St. James’ Park today. Ayoze Perez provided all three scores for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Top Toons

Ayoze Perez: Two goals in the blink of an eye and the clincher late in the match. He has been wonderful at St. James’ Park this season and was the Man of the Match on the day vs. Southampton with his crucial hat trick.

Salomon Rondon: His work rate pressuring the backline was huge and he did well to assist on Ayoze’s second score.

Miguel Almiron: Before his departure, he continued to have a massive impact on the match without registering any goals or assists. Miggy made great runs into the area, nutmegging opponents, and should have drawn a red card foul on James Ward-Prowse. More on that in a moment.

Mediocre Magpies

Injuries: Not anyone’s fault, but I can still be mad and shame the injury monster here. The Toon lost Almiron and Fabian Schar to injuries within a few minutes of each other and both players went straight down the tunnel.

Quick Kicks

  • Absolutely a red card for James Ward-Prowse. It was the definition of a goalscoring chance with the Magpies breaking out in a 2-v-1. If that doesn’t merit a red card, every side can do that and not be afraid of a counter-attack.
  • Assistant Mikel Antia was sent off for arguing the poor decision. I hope he got his money’s worth because it was a bad call and his reaction was similar to all the rest of us watching.
  • With a two-goal lead, it was not surprising to see Newcastle take their foot off the gas and get pushed back in the second half.
  • Isaac Hayden had two shining moments before making way for Mohamed Diame. He slid in for the tackle to win possession on Ayoze’s first goal. Then, he had a shot off the volley that took a deflection and led to a big save from Angus Gunn.
  • Man, Christian Atsu was lively today. Coming on for Almiron, he pressed the So’ton backline and used to pace to get the ball deep into the attacking half.
  • In both halves, Paul Dummett worked his tail off and came up with some massive clearances and blocked shots.

Next. The complicated case of Jonjo Shelvey.... dark
