Newcastle United can finish the season with 47 points
By Durim Halimi
Newcastle United have a favorable schedule that could see them finish the season with 47 points.
After defeating Leicester City 1-0 on Friday, Newcastle United have earned 38 points with four matches remaining on their schedule. Aside from their match against Liverpool on May 5th, the Magpies have a lenient schedule comprised of two relegation-threatened teams and one team that has already been relegated to the EFL Championship.
Newcastle will host Southampton at St. James’ Park next Saturday and they will have to travel to Brighton on April 27th and to London to face Fulham on May 12th. Let’s take a look at how many points Newcastle have finished with in previous seasons and predict the outcome of their upcoming fixtures.
Previous Point Totals
Newcastle’s best season in the Premier League was the 2011-12 campaign when they finished in fifth place with 65 points and had a performance record of 19-8-11. The Magpies’ worst season in the Top Flight was in 2008 when the club finished in 18th place with 34 points and had a performance record of 7-13-18. Other seasons include:
- 2012-13: 16th place, 41 points
- 2013-14: 10th place, 49 points
- 2014-15: 15th place, 39 points
- 2015-16: 18th place (R), 37 points
- 2017-18: 10th place, 44 points
Match Predictions
Newcastle vs. Southampton
Despite playing at home, this will be the most difficult of the three “lenient” matches for Newcastle. Southampton are still fighting for survival and they will look to attack the Magpies on the road. However, Newcastle have been in top form at home since January and I expect them to win this match by a score of 2-0.
Brighton vs. Newcastle
Whenever these two teams meet the matches are competitive. On paper, Newcastle are the favorites to win this match, but Brighton are difficult to break down when they play at home. Like Southampton, Brighton are also fighting for survival and they will also look to attack from the start of the match. For that reason, I have to predict that this match will end in a 1-1 draw.
Fulham vs. Newcastle
Fulham have already been relegated and they have nothing to play for except pride in front of their home supporters. The atmosphere in London might make things difficult for Newcastle, but the Magpies have too much talent to drop points in this affair. My prediction is that Newcastle will win 1-0 against the team with the worst defensive record in the Premier League.
