Should Newcastle United consider signing Aaron Mooy from Huddersfield?

The season is not over yet, but should Newcastle United sign Aaron Mooy from Huddersfield Town this summer?
Huddersfield Town are simply waiting for the official news of their relegation to the EFL Championship after earning a mere 14 points from 29 matches this season. The Terriers have been sitting in the league basement for months now, but their star player, Aaron Mooy, might not join his team in the second tier.
The Australian international is too good to waste his talent in the EFL Championship and three pundits from FOX Soccer have suggested Mooy to consider a move to Newcastle United. After reading this article, I thought this discussion was worthy of an analysis on our platform here at Newcastle Toons. That being said, should Newcastle consider signing Mooy this summer?
Analyzing Aaron Mooy
With the arrival of Miguel Almiron on Tyneside, Rafa Benitez has altered the way his team plays. All season long, Newcastle were a defend first and attack later type of team, but over the last few weeks the Magpies have transformed into an attacking side that has created 68 attempts in their last four games. That statistic is worth mentioning because Mooy is not an attacking player.
Mooy is a defensive midfielder who assists his back-line more than the players ahead of him, however, this is okay. Despite being a defensive-minded midfielder, the Australian midfielder has managed to score six goals and bag three assists in his 57 Premier League appearances with Huddersfield Town.
Looking at his statistics from another angle, over the last two seasons Mooy has scored more goals than Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-yueng and Mohamed Diame combined. Considering that Mooy has played on a significantly weaker team makes that comparison even more alarming. Mooy is a talented player and he would definitely be a contributor for Newcastle. With Isaac Hayden set to leave in the summer and Shelvey also likely to be swooped into the transfer rumors, Newcastle would be wise to bring the 28-year-old midfielder in.
Mooy has been the only bright spot for Huddersfield Town over the last few seasons and he could have a positive impact on Newcastle’s roster. Mooy has shown that he can score some goals, find open teammates and serve as a reliable defender in midfield. Benitez should strongly consider signing Mooy upon the conclusion of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
