Newcastle United topped Huddersfield Town at home, courtesy of a couple goals and a red card.

In a must-win match at home, Newcastle United got two second-half goals to defeat a 10-man Huddersfield Town. After a first half filled with close calls, Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez converted chances early in the second half to give Rafa Benitez’s side a crucial win.

Top Toons

Miguel Almiron: Wow. It’s remarkable what a difference he makes. His passing, pace, and flair on the ball were eye-catching in his first Premier League start. He was unlucky not to score when he hit the post. His run and cross started the sequence for the second goal.

Salomon Rondon: After some rough misses in the first half, he buried his first chance of the second frame and gave Newcastle a lead they would not relinquish. He also slightly touched the ball to Ayoze for the following goal.

Ayoze Perez: He was active and involved in the attack and did well to convert the club’s second goal.

Sean Longstaff: As he has nearly every time out, the youngster continues to improve and showcase the potential to be an elite distributor in the midfield. He should have tallied an assist on Rondon’s first-half headed miss. His shot off the post would have been an epic goal.

Mediocre Magpies

I would be really stretching it if I put someone here. Fabian Schar for putting a weak shot on frame in the first half? Nope. This was a quality performance by a better team with a man advantage.

Quick Kicks

  • Good ball in from Miggy on his first cross of the day. If it had ended in a goal, his legend would be cemented.
  • Initially, I didn’t think Tommy Smith’s tackle merited a red card, but after watching the replay, it was reckless and studs up. He was right to be sent off.
  • I won’t lie, I was nervous after the first half. Fears of having a man advantage and tons of quality chances, only to draw or lose vs. the league’s worst side, had me shook! Thankfully, Rondon and Ayoze erased those quickly in the second frame.
  • He wasn’t tested consistently, but Martin Dubravka earned a clean sheet and did what was required to move past his Wolves’ miscue.
  • The double post sequence for Almiron and Rondon was ridiculous.
