Despite Martin Dubravka’s overall quality for Newcastle United, he should not be immune to supporters’ criticism.
On February 11th, 2018, Martin Dubravka thrilled Toon Army in his Newcastle United debut while shutting out Manchester United in a 1-0 win. Fast forward to February 11, 2019, Dubravka drops a cross and allows a last-second goal that levels the match for a frustrating draw vs. Wolves. Between those two matches, exactly a year apart, Dubravka has been pretty darn good for Rafa Benitez and the Magpies. But, that does not mean he is immune to the normal criticisms that players receive when their play merits it.
In their last two matches, a Dubravka mistake has cost Newcastle United late goals and crucial points. Against Spurs, the Slovakian goalkeeper was beaten by Son from outside the area on a seemingly routine shot and Newcastle United lost 1-0 on the road. This week, he couldn’t catch a cross vs. Wolves and allowed Willy Boly to head home the stoppage-time equalizer. He was fouled, but it doesn’t excuse him not catching the ball.
While he’s usually consistent and has helped secure more points for the Toon than he’s lost, it’s still okay to be mad at him and blame him for the poorly conceded goals. With those lost points, the Magpies were not able to separate themselves from the relegation zone as much as they would have liked.
Down the stretch this season, just like last season, Dubravka will be key to Newcastle United’s success and safety in the Premier League. He’s tied for 5th in the Premier League with seven clean sheets and tied for 6th with 77 saves. Never forget, the Toon acquired him permanently for reportedly less than five million in the summer.
Hopefully, there will not be many more miscues like the last couple matches from Dubravka moving forward. But, if there are, it’s okay to criticize the club’s star goalkeeper. We will still know you love him, just like we do.
