It was another devasting result late against Wolves this season as Newcastle United had to settle for one point after a stoppage-time equalizer.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of stoppage time vs. Wolves. Newcastle United lost their lead in the last moments and had to settle for a road draw against Wolves, the club that beat them in stoppage time earlier this season. Isaac Hayden provided the score for Newcastle and Willy Boly leveled things at the death. Let’s take a deeper dive into the match and its crucial performers.
Top Toons
Sean Longstaff: This kid impresses each time out. He played under control and spread the ball around on the road for the Toon.
Isaac Hayden: We all had him as the goalscorer, right? The midfielder buried his chance and should have given Newcastle United the win.
Mediocre Magpies
DeAndre Yedlin: Not the best outing for the speedy American fullback. He was bested throughout the match 1-v-1 by Wolves’ wingers.
Martin Dubravka: Whether he was fouled or not, Dubravka has to come up with that catch in the most crucial moment.
Quick Kicks
- For me, it was a foul on Boly’s goal. I know it wasn’t heavy contact, but goalkeepers get that whistle most times.
- As I mentioned above, Dubravka should not have needed a whistle; he should have made the catch. That’s a couple big mistakes recently and I’ll have an article on that soon.
- You’re probably surprised I have not mentioned Miguel Almiron’s debut yet, but patience is a virtue. Having watched him in Major League Soccer for a couple of seasons, I was not surprised that he impacted the match the way he did. He has pace for days and an eye for creating. Start him next time out.
- It’s going to be hard for Rafa Benitez to sit Longstaff down once everyone is healthy. He is playing well and the experience will only continue his development.
- That draw didn’t feel exactly like a loss, but it surely was not the result this one seemed destined for. Thankfully, Wolves cannot hurt Newcastle United at the death anymore this season.
What’s Next?
Vacation…kind of. Newcastle United will travel to Spain for a warm-weather camp, culminating with a friendly vs. CSKA Moscow.
