Cheick Tiote will forever be a Newcastle United legend for his goal seven years ago.

As a soccer supporter, there are always goals that hold a special place in your memory forever. For Newcastle United fans, Cheick Tiote’s goal eight years ago is one of the fondest memories.

We all remember the details of that day, February 5th, 2011. Newcastle United trailed Arsenal 4-0 at halftime. The crowd at St. James’ Park was stunned. But, the true surprise came in the second half. Joey Barton buried a pair of penalty kicks, sandwiched around a Leon Best goal. With the scoreline 4-3 in the 87th minute, the late Cheick Tiote smashed a long distance volley seemingly out of nowhere to complete one of the greatest comebacks in soccer and sports history.

The soundtrack to that goal was provided by Real Radio’s Justin Lockwood. His unforgettable commentary of, “Boom Boom, Cheick Cheick, the room!” will live on in Toon Army lore forever.

Tiote was a hard-working, physical midfielder, serving as captain briefly for the Magpies. In his later years with the club, he battled injuries and fell out of favor when Rafa Benitez arrived. He stuck around for half of the 2016-17 Championship season for Newcastle United before leaving to join Beijing Enterprises.

Tragically, Tiote passed away suddenly at a training session in China due to cardiac arrest. Many Newcastle United fans, along with current and former players paid respect to the Ivorian. Despite his death way too soon, Tiote will live on forever in the hearts of Toon Army. Any supporter of Newcastle United worth their salt gets goosebumps everytime they see the video or hear the commentary from that magical goal against the Gunners.
