Newcastle United took their sweet time signing players in January, but multiple new signings walked through the door on deadline day.

Simply put, January was a hectic month for Newcastle United comprised of criticism, endless rumors, a failed medical and last minute signings. That being said, the January transfer window is closed and the Magpies will have to wait until July to sign or sell players. Here is an overview of the players Newcastle brought in, sold or loaned out and who almost joined the team.

New Signings

  • Antonio Barreca was the first new signing (loanee) to walk through the door for Newcastle. The 23-year-old Italian left-back joined the Magpies from AS Monaco and he is expected to serve as the primary cover for Paul Dummett.
  • Miguel Almiron signed his contract shortly after Barreca and supporters were happy to see their club spend big money on a quality player. Almiron will be expected to have an immediate impact as he is now Newcastle’s most talented player.

Players Loaned Out

  • Jacob Murphy was loaned out to West Brom in the EFL Championship.
  • Elias Sorensen was loaned out to Blackpool in League One..
  • Liam Gibson earned a loan move to Accrington Stanely in League One.
  • Jamie Sterry, who made it on the team sheet for Newcastle on the bench a few times this season, has been loaned out to Crewe Alexandra in League Two.
  • Callum Roberts joined League Two outfit Colchester United on loan on deadline day.
  • Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar were loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Championship.
  • Josef Yarney was loaned out to Chesterfield in the National League (fifth tier).

Almost Happened

  • Jordan Lukaku, the brother of Romelu, came to Tyneside to finalize a loan deal with Newcastle, however, the defender unfortunately failed his medical test and was sent back to Lazio.
  • Gelson Martins would have been an impressive loan signing from Atletico Madrid, but the Portuguese winger was “lukewarm” about moving to Newcastle. As a result, Martins decided to join AS Monaco on loan.
  • Diego Laxalt was a top target for Benitez to add some competition on the wing, but the AC Milan player was not all that keen to play for Newcastle.
  •  Andreas Samaris – the Greek international midfielder was close to accepting a loan move to Newcastle, but Benfica decided to keep him in Portugal.
