Newcastle United shocked the Premier League world when they topped Manchester City yesterday.
Just as we all expected, just kidding, Newcastle United defeated Manchester City yesterday. Salomon Rondon erased Manchester City’s 1-0 lead before Matt Ritchie buried a penalty to give the Toon a massive victory in their fight for Premier League survival. We take a deeper look at the key players.
Top Toons
Salomon Rondon: Newcastle United’s attack is so much different when their target man is up top. Rondon buried the equalizer and works hard to make sure he impacts the match.
Matt Ritchie: This man stepped up to bury a match winner against the reigning league champions. That is not an easy task. His cross (it wasn’t his best) also started the sequence for the opening goal.
Sean Longstaff: Pep Guardiola specifically mentioned his squad didn’t do well against Newcastle’s holding midfielders (Longstaff and Isaac Hayden). He didn’t look overmatched vs. the reigning champs and he did well to earn the penalty.
Mediocre Magpies
DeAndre Yedlin: Playing as a wingback, Yedlin was too careless in his passing. He let Bernardo Silva get behind him on Manchester City’s early goal.
Quick Kicks
- What a match! You have to love the fight this club showed with nobody expecting them to even compete. It was a huge result and a night for the players and supporters to feel great!
- Longstaff and Isaac Hayden played really well. I was among those frustrated with Hayden being in the starting lineup, but he proved me wrong. If he departs this week, he will leave on a high note.
- Florian Lejeune and Fabian Schar came up big on a couple of occasions to keep City out, including clearing away a goal-bound header.
- I’m sure there are discussions internally about it, but I would love to see Rondon return on a permanent deal. He works hard and impacts every match he plays in.
- After so much doom and gloom this season, it’s amazing to have the excitement of this win and the positive news regarding potential transfers.
