Newcastle United’s FA Cup run comes to an end at the hands of Watford.

Trying to advance into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in over a decade, Newcastle United came up short against Watford. Andre Gray broke the deadlock in the second half before Isaac Success sealed the deal in the final minutes. We take a look at the action.

Top Toons

Sean Longstaff: One of the major positives of late for Newcastle United. He continues to showcase vision, passing ability, and some quickness on the ball.

Matt Ritchie: He was the most involved Newcastle United player on the day. His work rate was quality and he delivered some good balls in from corner kicks but no one got on the end of them.

Mediocre Magpies

Isaac Hayden: He had his usual share of reckless challenges and fouls in poor areas. He’s been consistently poor.

Jacob Murphy: A lot of pace, not a lot of final result. He got into positive areas, as he usually does, but there was nothing in the final ball.

Quick Kicks

  • I did not anticipate in a million years that Javier Manquillo would effectively chip the goalkeeper before having the ball headed away by a defender. What a time to be alive!
  • Jamaal Lascelles is starting to look more like his usual self.
  • Personally, I am glad there was a winner in this one. I hoped Newcastle United might continue their run, but another replay in the FA Cup would have been the worst outcome. We lost, but at least we can now focus solely on our Premier League safety.
  • Kenedy continued a poor season today vs. Watford. Article coming soon on his disappointing loan stint.
  • I think Freddie Woodman should have done better on Andre Gray’s goal. It didn’t appear he was caught on the wrong foot and the shot was at a savable height.
  • Poor marking on the break allowed for Isaac Success’ goal late in the match.

What’s Next?

Newcastle United will host Manchester City on Tuesday. In their FA Cup fixture over the weekend, City destroyed Burnley, 3-0 at the Etihad. Pep Guardiola’s side enters the match having scored 27 goals and conceding zero in their last six fixtures. The Magpies have not defeated Man. City in a Premier League match since 2005. Michael Owen scored the lone goal in that 1-0 Newcastle win.
