Newcastle United have faced Watford in the FA Cup more than a handful of times, including four times in one tournament.

After defeating Blackburn Rovers in a third round replay, Newcastle United will host Watford in the FA Cup fourth round and look to make their first appearance in the fifth round since 2005-06. The Hornets topped semi-professional side Woking FC to get here and will be looking to advance to the fifth round for the first time since 2015-16 when they made the semifinals. These clubs have met in the FA Cup before, seven times to be exact. Before they face on this weekend, we look back at those previous FA Cup fixtures.

The first two matches ever between Newcastle United and Watford took place in the FA Cup. In 1924, a Stan Seymour goal secured the Magpies a 1-0 third-round victory. The clubs met next in the 1932 quarterfinals. Newcastle United won 5-0, led by a hat trick from Jack Allen. In both 1924 and 1932, Newcastle United won the FA Cup crown.

They would not meet in the tournament again until the late 1980s. The clubs would face off four times…in 1989 alone. In a third-round match on January 7th, they played to a scoreless draw. When they met again for the replay on January 10th, the scoreline ended 2-2. Before 1990-91, the replays kept going until there was a winner, unlike the current format. Playing the third replay on January 16th, Newcastle United and Watford again combined for zero goals. Finally, there was a winner in the fourth replay. Watford picked up a 1-0 victory at Vicarage Road. A Glenn Roeder own goal was the deciding factor. Ironically, the defender would leave Tyneside to play for Watford that summer. He would go on to manage both clubs after his playing career ended.

The only time the clubs have played in the FA Cup since that quartet of matches in 1989 was in the 2016 tournament. Troy Deeney pushed Watford past Newcastle United in the third round.
