A Willian goal gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

After the earlier matches, Newcastle United found themselves in the relegation zone. Unfortunately, they couldn’t pull themselves out with a point away from home, losing 2-1 to Chelsea. Pedro scored in the first quarter hour before Ciaran Clark equalized on a corner kick. In the second half, Willian curled a shot past Martin Dubravka for the winner.

Top Toons

Salomon Rondon: He was a monster winning the ball in the air and holding up play, often the only player forward. His passing out to the wings was quality as well.

Ciaran Clark: That was not an easy header to score from the corner. It was a massive goal for Newcastle United.

Sean Longstaff: Playing against Chelsea in his second-ever EPL appearance, Longstaff looked confident in the midfield. He did well to spray the ball out to the wings and compete defensively. He also earned a last-minute corner for NUFC.

Mediocre Magpies

DeAndre Yedlin: He had a couple poor giveaways and gave Willian too much room on Chelsea’s second goal. Chelsea clearly felt confident going at the American defender.

Christian Atsu: His speed should have been more helpful for Newcastle United on the break, but he didn’t have enough to make a difference. His poor delivery to end the match was symbolic of this current Newcastle form.

Quick Kicks

  • I’m not sure if it was the early goal, but Newcastle United played less defensively than I expected. It was a very pleasant surprise.
  • Longstaff did not look overwhelmed in his first Premier League start. Being that it was against a top side in Chelsea, that is a major positive going forward for the young midfielder.
  • Matt Ritchie did well to assist on Clark’s goal, but he had two bad mishits on quality chances.
  • Is there anyone truly playing exceptionally well right now? The club had a decent performance, but they need someone to step up big down the stretch or we might be covering the Championship again next season.
