Newcastle United are officially in talks with Miguel Almiron and his agent, but how likely is it that the MLS star will come to Tyneside?

Newcastle United have been linked to Atlanta United’s star player Miguel Almiron for several weeks. Now that the transfer window is open, Almiron’s agent has confirmed that the trio of Almiron, Atlanta and Newcastle are currently negotiating a transfer deal. Other reports earlier this week claimed that Almiron’s wage demands of £100,000 per week took Newcastle by surprise, but the player’s agent says the problem lies somewhere else.

Newcastle have the financial capacity to satisfy Almiron’s weekly wage request, but it looks like the Magpies must improve their formal bid to the MLS champions in order to seal the deal. Almiron’s agent went on to say the following:

"With Newcastle, I spoke about the player’s salary, but the club needs to raise their offers with Atlanta if they want to get the player. Miguel Almiron’s value is high, it’s not for any club to sign him[…]If Newcastle raise their offers, they could be one of the clubs, but there are other clubs. There are clubs from England, Germany, Italy and Spain that are interested in Miguel Almiron, but we aren’t going to rush things."

January 15th: Important Date?

Almiron’s agent made it clear that a deal will be finalized for Almiron by mid-January and he specifically mentioned the importance of January 15th, which is next Tuesday – the same day that Newcastle will play Blackburn in a replay of the FA Cup third round. As noted in the direct quotes above, Almiron has attracted the attention of multiple teams in every major European league.

As a result, Almiron’s agent will travel to Europe next week to meet with all of these teams individually to see where they all stand and how serious they are in landing the Paraguayan star. With this being the case, Newcastle must do everything they can to beat the competition when they meet with Almiron’s representatives.

The best way to do this is if Mike Ashley spends £24million to finalize the deal with Atlanta prior to next Tuesday. The one-on-one talks are not a problem, so this deal could realistically be sealed soon, but it all depends on Ashley.
