It was more of the same for Newcastle United against Manchester United yesterday.

Newcastle United dropped another match at home yesterday, losing 2-0 to Manchester United. Romelu Lukaku capitalized on a rare Martin Dubravka mistake and Marcus Rashford added the second. We take a deeper look at the Newcastle United side of things.

Top Toons

Christian Atsu: The winger was the main source of attacking punch for Newcastle United. While he needed to be more clinical in the final moment, his pace and ability on the ball created some of the best chances for the Toon.

Jonjo Shelvey: Coming on as a substitute, Shelvey had a few major moments for the hosts. His pass to Ayoze Perez was magical and he had two chances towards goal.

Mediocre Magpies

Martin Dubravka: He is such a steady player that his fumbling of Rashford’s free-kick was shocking. It was that unfortunate miscue that allowed Lukaku’s crucial opening goal.

Ayoze Perez: That aforementioned pass from Shelvey was wasted by Perez. He took too long to shoot and was caught. A goal there would have been massive.

Quick Kicks

  • Unless he is really far away from full fitness, Jonjo Shelvey needs to start the next league match vs. Chelsea. His passing is desperately needed, especially with Ki away on international duty.
  • This was actually a decent outing for Newcastle United. They seemed to be trending towards splitting the points, but a couple of mistakes happen, then they lose 2-0.
  • The Dubravka play is a shocking error that can happen from time to time. The woeful marking on the second goal is less acceptable. That’s a troubling trend that has come to light on multiple occasions this season at crucial moments.
  • I’m not sure if it was frustration or just aggressive play, but Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles made some very reckless challenges. It was a relief to see both on the pitch at the final whistle.
  • While the club got Florian Lejeune back in the squad after his injury, they could be without Mo Diame and DeAndre Yedlin. Diame had to be replaced due to his leg injury and Yedlin was limping around in the final minutes. Newcastle United does not have the depth to deal with more injuries.
