Saturday will be the 72nd time Newcastle United and Fulham have faced off.

After an away win for Newcastle United against Huddersfield Town, they will return home to host Fulham on Saturday. This will mark the 72nd time the clubs have squared off and the Magpies actually trail in the series (27-13-31). We take a look at the history between Newcastle United and Fulham.

The clubs first played in 1908 with the Toon destroying Fulham 6-0 in the FA Cup. They followed that with a 4-0 FA Cup win before the two sides did battle in league play. The first League Division Two matchup went to Fulham and the clubs were somewhat evenly matched, with Newcastle carrying a slight edge.

With a close series all-time, there has not been a remarkable streak of wins for one side. The longest is four, which Fulham came away with from 1980 to 1982. Newcastle United is undefeated in four FA Cup fixtures vs. Fulham.  In the first Premier League matchup between the two, Fulham topped the Toon, 3-1. Gary Speed scored the lone Newcastle United goal that day.

Recent history has not been kind to the Magpies. They have only won five of the last 18 fixtures. Hatem Ben Arfa gave Newcastle United their most recent win in 2013, 1-0 at St. James’ Park. Fulham will enter Saturday on a three-match winning streak. A 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon scored a brace in the most recent match, a 3-1 Fulham away win at Newcastle.

Obviously, a big part of Fulham’s promotion success last season can be attributed to former Newcastle United striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic. He scored consistently on loan and signed permanently this summer. His participation should add to the fun history between the two sides.
