Salomon Rondon pushed Newcastle United to a 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town.

In a rainy away match, Newcastle United battled to a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town. Salomon Rondon provided the lone score for the Toon.

Top Toons

Salomon Rondon: Quickly becoming a hero for the Toon Army. With a largely defensive effort, he buried the chance he got and gave Newcastle United three vital road points.

Javier Manquillo: Starting for the suspended DeAndre Yedlin, Manquillo set up Rondon’s goal with a perfect pass. He had a similar pass earlier that was a fraction too strong and was intercepted by the keeper.

Martin Dubravka: He was under a barrage as he has been at times this season, but when his number was called, the star goalkeeper made the save.

Mediocre Magpies

Fabian Schar: He wasn’t overly poor and he played well in a shutout effort, but he needed to do better with his chance on the free kick. Schar also had a moment or two where he tried to do too much with the ball at his feet and gave away possession.

Quick Kicks

  • Rondon simply takes advantage of his chances. That sounds simple, but relying on Joselu and Dwight Gayle last season, that didn’t often take place. When the club needs a goal, Rondon is often involved and he’s truly showcasing his value.
  • I know Newcastle United will play a lot of matches with a mind more for players sitting back than going forward, but I don’t think today needed to be one of those matches. Huddersfield are the lowest scoring side in the Premier League this season and this one seemed to be a winnable road fixture. Thankfully, they were able to score one on the counter-attack.
  • Wow, I wish Fabian Schar could have buried that first-half chance. He found himself alone at the far post on a lovely free-kick and his effort was denied at close range.
  • The offside decision on Ayoze Perez was razor thin and I think incorrect. I’ve always been in the school of thinking that if it’s that close, don’t raise the flag.
  • I loved the energy Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu brought. They flew all over the pitch and made Huddersfield work to win battles for the ball.
