Newcastle United’s all-time history vs. Wolves
We look back at the all-time series between Newcastle United and Wolves.
After a midweek draw on the road, Newcastle United will return home to face Wolverhampton this Sunday. Before the clubs face off for their first matchup since the 2016-17 season, we take a look back at the all-time series between the two sides.
Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have met 94 times. The Magpies have won 32, drawn 23, and lost 39. The first meeting came back in 1898 in League Division One action. Wolverhampton won the match 4-2. They would come out victorious in six of the first ten matches and only lost twice in that stretch.
The longest unbeaten run of the series went Wolverhampton’s direction from February 1952 to March 1955. Three times the clubs have needed to play a replay in the FA Cup to determine who advances. That includes the 1951 FA Cup semi-final, with Newcastle United winning the replay 2-1 en route to winning the trophy.
Recent history has favored Newcastle United but also includes some controversy. Wolves won only once in the latest nine meetings. The clubs faced off three times in the 2016-17 Championship season. There were 18 total cards across the three fixtures, two Newcastle wins and one for Wolves. In the Wolves’ win, Jonjo Shelvey racially abused Romain Saiss, who is still with the club, and drew a five-match ban from the FA.
Just like their all-time series, Wolves are outplaying Newcastle United this season in the Premier League. Wolverhampton sits in 12th, six points and two positions ahead of the Toon. Kickoff is set for Sunday afternoon at St. James’ Park.
