Newcastle United defended their way to a draw on the road vs. Everton.

After a tough loss over the weekend, Newcastle United bounced back yesterday to split points with Everton at Goodison Park. We take a deeper look at the gritty performance in the road draw.

Top Toons

Martin Dubravka: Simply put, he’s a monster. The Slovakian keeper came up big on multiple occasions for the Toon and continues to be a bright spot this season.

Salomon Rondon: His chances were few and far between, but he buried the ball he needed to. Jacob Murphy found the big striker at the far post and he did his job to score the lone Newcastle United goal.

Federico Fernandez: When Dubravka wasn’t available to make a big first half save, the star defender slid in to turn it away. He was a key member of the five-man back line.

Mediocre Magpies

Javier Manquillo: It was another weak performance at left-back for Manquillo. He was working hard, but it wasn’t enough vs. the Toffees.

DeAndre Yedlin: Playing opposite Manquillo, Yedlin had a downer of a performance trying to slow down the pacey and crafty Richarlison.

Ki: It wasn’t a bad outing for the midfielder, but with the lack of possession, he wasn’t able to do much to help his side on this day.

Quick Kicks

  • What a solid result after a dismal performance over the weekend. Everton is a quality side and Newcastle did well to match their dangerous attack with a concentrated defensive effort.
  • Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu played well on the wings, in place of Kenedy and the suspended Matt Ritchie. Murphy’s run and assist were massive for the result.
  • Supporters are wondering if Newcastle United should stick with a five-man back line. It certainly helps lock down an opponent and it might be a solid idea, especially against dangerous attacking sides.
  • Dubravka continually comes up big for the Magpies. On any given day, he can be one of the elite goalkeepers in the Premier League.
  • It was good to have Jamaal Lascelles back. He could have played better, but it’s nice to have the captain’s leadership on the pitch.

Newcastle United will return home to face Wolves on Sunday. Wolverhampton came up with a big 2-1 win yesterday against Chelsea.
