Newcastle United will take on Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the FA Cup.

With the FA Cup draw taking place on Monday, we found out that Newcastle United will host the second division’s Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the competition. Two of the three clubs legendary striker Alan Shearer played for, Newcastle United and Blackburn have faced off143 times.

The all-time series is razor thin. Newcastle United have the narrow edge in the series with 58 wins, 56 losses, and 29 draws. The clubs first met in 1898, but their first two fixtures were listed as “test matches”. Blackburn won the first League Division One matchup 4-2.

Newcastle United have a few unbeaten streaks of six matches or more, Blackburn actually carries the more impressive runs. They won eight of nine matches 1927 to 1931. They also won six straight matches from 2007-2010, all in the Premier League. The widest margin of victory in the series is six and that goes back to a 7-1 result in favor of Blackburn back in 1925.

Despite Blackburn’s well-documented drop from the Premier League to the third division, they’ve been very competitive against Newcastle United. They met four times in the 2011-12 season, twice in the Premier League, once in the League Cup, and once in the FA Cup. Newcastle United won both EPL matches, including a 3-1 win in September courtesy of a hat-trick from Demba Ba. In their League Cup fourth round matchup, Newcastle United would score twice in the 90th minute to force extra time. In the added period, Blackburn scored two goals to Newcastle’s one and took the victory. The FA Cup third round fixture was another thriller. Jonas Gutierrez chipped the goalkeeper in the 90th minute to win the match 2-1 and broke out his trademark Spiderman celebration.

The last season they met was in the 2016-17 Championship season. Blackburn won both matches, twice by a 1-0 scoreline.

The clubs did business this summer as the Magpies sold forward Adam Armstrong to Blackburn. The once-promising Newcastle United prospect has one goal in 17 appearances for the Rovers this year.
